March 23: The Stevens Computer Science department, in conjunction with Microsoft Corporation, hosted a workshop for high school computer science teachers teachers on March 23. Alfred Thompson from Microsoft spoke about the use of gaming technology in education from middle school up through graduate school. Speakers from the Stevens computer science department spoke about various aspects of computer science pedagogy, including the use of tools such as Alice and DrJava, and getting young people, particularly young women, more involved in computer science. The workshop had over a hundred attendees. The model of the workshop, where high school teachers brought some of their students with them, is one that Microsoft may be proposing to other universities around the country. As a follow-up from the workshop, the department will be providing on-line fora for teachers of computer science to share ideas and discuss pedagogical issues.
